Growing your own cannabis is a fun and inexpensive way to put high-quality buds in your jar; but its not always that easy, high yielding, potent, resinous buds take time and care.

Treat Cannabis Like Your Friend

Like all gardening, cannabis growing is a skill developed over time. It is easy to learn tips and tricks alone the way but the only true way to develop skill is over time.

Growing your own cannabis for the first time can be nerve-wrecking but this guide is here to show you that the process is not complicated, and can be done with as little as $80 max, or you can go all out.

Totally depends on how much time you would like to spend on this 'cannaventure'

Understanding the fundamentals of cannabis growing is a good place to start your marijuana growing journey.

Making informed decisions early will maximize your end yields. These six basic steps will give you an excellent knowledge base to become an expert marijuana gardener.

STEP 1 : Choose and soak your seeds

Germinating seeds requires you to soak your seed in a small container with lukewarm water and place in a dark and warm place for about 12-24 hours, but no longer. (There are many ways to germinate seeds in soil, in a wet paper towel, in starter plugs) Doing this also helps to loosen the shell as it becomes a little softer making it easier for the seed to slowly crack it open.

When your seed sinks to the bottom it is ready to be planted, and sometimes the seed will pop out a small taproot. A seed can still be planted though if it does not sink.

STEP 2 : Planting your seeds

We like to use seedling pucks that are easy to find and great for beginners not looking to spend a leg and an arm on fancy pucks

To expand the puck soak it in water for 10 minutes. Once your seedling puck has absorbed enough water and has expanded to its maximum size, drain off any excess water. The soil should be soft and fluffy, allowing the roots to pass through freely.

Poke your pinky finger 1/4 in deep for your seed. Use a small spoon to lift the seed out of the water. If it has popped out of its shell be careful not to break the seedling. Gently place the seed into the hole and lightly cover it with dirt from the puck.

Now that you have started the germination process, your seedling will come above ground within two weeks. The older the seed, the longer it takes for it to germinate.

STEP 3 : Finding light for your seedling

Seedlings need medium amount of light, enough to grow but not too much that the seedling burns. Leaving the seedling in direct sunlight will cause the leaves to curl inwards, while too little light will cause the seedling to stretch.

If growing outside, seedlings want to see a direct light source to stop them stretching. If inside, a bright window with more than half a day of sunlight will work just as well as any grow tents. We'll cover lighting in more depth in a later blog.

STEP 4 : Transplanting

When the plant has finished its journey in its puck, you will notice roots will start emerging from the bottom of your seedling puck, this means plant is ready to be transplanted into a bigger pot.

Be very careful not to damage the roots. Any stress will slow its growth, yield and many other characteristics.

Dig a small hole in your bigger pot for the seedling. Then carefully remove your seedling along with its seedling puck. "The best way is to invert the germination cup and tap on the bottom, being careful to hold any soil from falling out with your hand."

Burry the rest of the puck so that all the roots are covered, but not the small cannabis plant emerging.

Give it a healthy watering to set the roots in the ground, skip your next watering so the roots can take hold.

STEP 5 : Flowering Stage

Once you switch to a 12/12 light cycle or the buds begin to form. Start by removing smaller branches and clusters that aren’t receiving light.

The plant will redistribute energy to the remaining bud sites. Your plant may look droopy after the process but will bounce back quickly. As the buds grow bigger pay close attention to the humidity around the cultivar.

Too much will cause the plant to mold, too little and the trichomes will dry out, causing the plant to provide less quality buds.

(You can optimize growth by removing any leaves that aren’t receiving direct light at the beginning of the flowering stage.)

STEP 6 : Flush & Harvest

Your plant is mature when the hairs on the buds are 80% orange. For more accuracy use a microscope to look at the trichomes. If 80% of the trichomes are cloudy, your plant is ready to flush then harvest.

Flushing your plant will help remove any excess nutrients from the soil and improve the quality of the harvest. To flush your plant, give it plenty of pH balanced water, twice the volume of the planter will be enough. Do this step one week before harvest.

Harvest your plant by clipping the branches or buds. Trim away any leaves and let them dry in a cool place for 5-7 days.

Once the stems snap when bent, the buds have completed drying and are ready to consume.

Drying racks are a great tool to dry as much cannabis as possible in a small amount of space.
